本書は、クリスチャン・マークレーのビデオ作品『Telephones』(1995) を書籍化したもの。元の映像作品では、ビデオ店でVHSフォーマットでレンタルされた映画からシーンをサンプリングし、7分間のモンタージュに編集。電話での会話の流れを最初から最後まで追ったシンプルながらも巧みな構成が魅力的です。この映像作品をどのように書籍化するのか、この野心的な試みでつくられた本書は、文庫サイズのリング綴じ製本がレトロなポケットサイズの電話帳を想起させる造本となっており、ページは上下に分割されています。読者が画像を混ぜ合わせたり揃えたりできるようにすることで、ビデオ作品『Telephones』の断片的で偶然的なコラージュがユニークな形で本として再現されています。
