which still stands and currently operates as "The Metropolitan Cafe"

The match depicted was between the Victoria cricket team and George Parr's touring All-England Eleven

taken from the top of the Victoria Building

so that dates this photograph just at the end of the 19th century

located in Little Collins Street

On the left hand side of the photo we see the Cromwell Building on the NW corner of Bourke and Elizabeth

St Paul's Church (1852) was to remain for another 22 years before being demolished (1885) and replaced by the current St Paul's Cathedral

yet was one of the major cities in the British Empire at the time
